The Medical Heritage Center (MHC), located in the Health Sciences Library (HSL), holds over 3,000 linear feet of archival materials. The archives were entrusted to the MHC’s care by numerous donors and document the history of medical education and practice in central Ohio. The collections also represent the history of dentistry, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, psychiatry, public health and central Ohioans’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The OhioLINK network, which connects Ohio libraries and provides The Ohio State University community with access to the collections of more than 85 institutions across the state, will be migrating to a new system over the next couple of months.

The NIH has released a new 2024 Public Access Policy removing the 12-month embargo period on publications. The change will now go into effect the beginning of July 2025; previously, this change was to go into effect the end of calendar year 2025.

Recent remodeling in the Medical Heritage Center (MHC) rare book room has increased our ability to preserve, promote, teach and celebrate the rich health care legacy of central Ohio and at The Ohio State University! The Medical Heritage Center installed compact mobile shelving for its rare books collection that will increase it’s rare book storage capacity by approximately 50 percent.

Did you know that the Health Sciences Library (HSL) has educational video resources available as well as full-text articles, databases and books? It is true. Several of the e-resources that we subscribe to in the library include video resources. In this post I am going to introduce you to two suites of video resources: Access Medicine and Clinical Key. Both of these resources are completely online and available to all faculty, staff and students.

In the 1980s while employed at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, Arol Augsburger, OD conceived of the idea to showcase celebrities who wore glasses to emphasize the importance of good vision in the lives of successful people. He wrote to celebrities asking for a pair of their eyeglasses with a photograph of them wearing them. He received more than 75 responses.

All library databases are accessible on mobile devices using any web browser. However, some HSL and Wexner Medical Center subscriptions include additional access to mobile apps that provide enhanced mobile access to these resources.

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) offers a variety of resources for student and faculty to use for study and instruction. To ensure that books and equipment can be used by all, the HSL has a set of policies for fees, fines and appeals related to late or lost items.

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) manages online access to over 17,000 eBooks, over 6,700 eJournals and over 100 databases. Library staff work hard to make access to these online resources as seamless as possible. However, we would like you to be aware of the most common problems and how to report them so they can be resolved as quickly as possible.

Anthony Baker, certified medical Illustrator (CMI) with The Ohio State University’s Health Sciences Library Medical Visuals team, led students through a step-by-step process for drawing a human brain. Organs such as brains are complex structures and can be daunting to draw. However, by breaking it down into a series of simple lines and shapes, even those with previously untapped drawing skills can draw a fairly accurate brain.

Creating an email search alert in various databases is an easy way to ensure that you are keeping up with the newest published literature. PubMed is one of the most commonly used biomedical databases and thankfully creating an email search alert within PubMed is fairly simple to do by following the steps below.

HSL Research & Education Librarian Anna Biszaha recently partnered for the second time with occupational therapy (OT) faculty members on a series of online learning modules to help support OT students working on their capstone project.

When the University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s Amy Heberling reached out to the Health Sciences Library’s (HSL) Interlibrary Services Department for help with access to a rare item in the Medical Heritage Center’s collections, an interesting and collaborative project between our HSL departments began. 

Covidence is a systematic review screening tool used to streamline the process of screening, reviewing, analyzing, synthesizing and disseminating data you collect from reviewed articles. The main point of conducting systematic reviews is to analyze the findings across studies to answer a clinical question.

The HSL is excited to offer Extended Library Access (ELA) to faculty, staff and students at Ohio State. Once approved, ELA allows individuals to access to the library’s 3^rd floor outside of normal operating hours.
