Evidence-Informed Practice: Keeping Up to Date Using the BrowZine App

by Kerry Dhakal, MAA, MLS

How do healthcare providers, faculty members, researchers and students keep up to date with the research going on in their fields? Some people will create article alerts in health sciences databases, like PubMed or CINAHL, and other people subscribe directly to specific journals. What if you could download and use a mobile app on your smartphone, tablet or iPad that regularly updates you when there are new articles available?

That is what BrowZine is and does. It is a mobile app that contains journal titles and articles that The Ohio State University subscribes to through the libraries. It is another way to access articles of interest and be notified when new articles and issues are available right from an app on your mobile device.

The BrowZine app display is organized like a physical bookshelf, to provide you with the experience of what it would be like to walk into a library and see those journals on the featured bookshelf. Each time a new issue is published for journals, a new journal cover is updated, and the articles therein are available by clicking on the journal cover.

Find journal titles on the topic of interest in BrowZine by using the search bar. Topic categories in BrowZine are broad, including categories such as biomedical and health sciences, business and economics, or social and behavioral science. Most people will use BrowZine to follow journal titles in their field of study or practice (i.e., dentistry, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, public health), but you can also choose other journal titles for your bookshelf that interest you. In BrowZine, you can create your own folder to store articles of interest, and you can share article links with colleagues or export article citations to reference management software, such as Zotero or RefWorks.
