Extended Library Access is available at the HSL!

Author: Erika Losey

The HSL is excited to offer Extended Library Access (ELA) to faculty, staff and students at Ohio State. Once approved, ELA allows individuals to access to the library’s 3rd floor outside of normal operating hours.

If you are a member of a health sciences college (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine and School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences) you are eligible to apply for this awesome service!

Need to stay up late to study but your roommate goes to bed early? Come study at the HSL!
Big exam to prep for the day after a holiday but all libraries are closed on the holiday? The HSL is open if you’ve got ELA!

Want to get some research done before an early shift at the hospital? The HSL is the perfect place to go.

Maybe you’re not a member of a health sciences college but you really need to access the HSL after hours because you’ve heard how great of a place it is study – no worries, you can still apply! With proper justification, others outside the health sciences college can be granted access as well.

Only the 3rd floor is available during ELA. It features a variety of seating areas to study, private study rooms and even a silent study zone. There are a multitude of whiteboards throughout the floor, making it easy to visualize your study material. There is also a separate zone on the 3rd floor for medical students already. So, if you have access to that zone, there is no need to apply for ELA.

You’re probably beginning to wonder, how do I actually apply for this service? It’s simple: head over to the  Extended Library Access page. Requests for ELA are submitted via a Qualtrics form. The following information is needed to process your request:

  • name.#
  • university affiliation
  • college or unit (tip: select “other” if you’re not a member of the health sciences colleges.

You can fill out a textbox with your college, justification for requesting this service), and university ID number. The last step is to upload a photo of the front of your physical BuckID. No digital BuckIDs, please! During times of high volume, like the beginning of a semester, it may take up to 7 business days for your request to be processed. You’ll receive an email from hslaccess@osumc.edu once your application has been approved.

If you’ve already been approved for ELA and want to continue to use this service every year (because why wouldn’t you?!), be sure to renew your application. Renewals take place at the end of the summer, before the fall semester begins. If you want to maintain your ELA access into the fall semester, you’ll receive an email at the end of July with a Qualtrics link to renew your access.

The HSL strives to make our space an inviting and comfortable place to study. We hope you will continue to utilize this service and our library!
