Ohio State Helps University of Nebraska through Interlibrary Services
When the University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s Amy Heberling reached out to the Health Sciences Library’s (HSL) Interlibrary Services Department for help with access to a rare item in the Medical Heritage Center’s collections, an interesting and collaborative project between our HSL departments began.
Heberling was working with Professor Rose Holz, the Associate Director of University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Women's & Gender Studies program and a historian who specializes in women, medicine and sexuality. She has published extensively on the 1939 Dickinson-Belskie Birth Series sculptures. Currently, she is working on digitizating all the editions of the Birth Atlas to get them out into the digital library domain for use by scholars and lay audiences. She has secured permission from the National Partnership for Women and Families (formerly the Maternity Center Association) to do so.
After having difficulty locating a copy of the 1953, 3rd edition of the Birth Atlas, Amy contacted Interlibrary Services at the HSL to ask if we could provide a scanned copy of the MHC’s copy of this atlas. Upon determining that the atlas was much too large to scan on any copier or scanner available to us, Farrell Hamill, Interlibrary Services Specialist reached out to Anthony Baker in the HSL’s Medical Visuals department to ask if they might be able to photograph the atlas, which he was able to do, making this a very successful cross-departmental project.
Just as Professor Holz was able to track down and get access to the hard-to-find Birth Atlas through Interlibrary Services, students, faculty and staff have access to these same resources to provide access to resources not available in Ohio State’s library collections.
HSL Interlibrary Services partners with University Libraries to provide Loan and Article Express (document delivery) services through the ILLiad request system to Ohio State faculty, staff and students. Individuals can register for an ILLiad account to request journal articles, book chapters or books not available at Ohio State. Article Express provides electronic delivery of journal articles to faculty and staff employed by the university as well as to our graduate and undergraduate students in degree-granting programs. The online request form can be used to obtain articles from both Ohio State and non-Ohio State collections. Interlibrary Services staff will scan and deliver articles from Ohio State collections or request them from other libraries.
