Learning in 3D: Exploring the Health Sciences Library’s Bones and Anatomical Models

Reserve bones and anatomical models from the HSL for hands-on learning.

Anatomical model of heart.

When it comes to learning anatomy, there’s nothing quite like seeing and holding three-dimensional models. The Health Sciences Library (HSL) offers the Bones and Anatomical Models Reserves collection that brings anatomy illustrations and diagrams to life. This collection supports hands-on learning for students across the health sciences colleges.

HSL’s collection includes a variety of anatomical models and skeletons all designed to help users better understand the complexity of the human body. Being able to see and touch a model helps students learn physical relationships and spatial orientation that goes beyond two-dimensional figures in a textbook. From anatomical models of organs such as the brain, heart, eye, ear and lungs, to bones, limbs and full skeletons, there are a variety of models available to support tactile learning. To view photos and more information about the models available for check out at HSL please view the Bones and Models Reserves LibGuide.

The bones and anatomical model reserves are available for current Ohio State students, faculty and staff to check out. They are available on a first come, first served basis, so it is a good idea to plan ahead during busy times like mid-terms and finals. Library users may check out two bone bags, or one model, or one full skeleton at one time. Bones and models can be checked out for two hours at a time and must be returned 15 minutes before closing, so staff are able to check in the items before closing the library. These items are not eligible for renewals and must remain in the library while in use. Overdue bones and models are fined $5 per hour, with a maximum charge of $100.

Bones and models may be used outside of the library for educational events, not personal use. If you are interested in requesting bones or models for use at an educational event outside of the library, please review the Bones and Models Policy for Outside Library Use policybefore submitting a Request to Use Bones and Models Outside the Library. Requests need to be reviewed and approved, please submit requests at least three (3) business days before they are needed.

Next time you need an anatomy study tool, stop by the Health Sciences Library and check out the bones and anatomical models. They encourage active study, collaborative discussion and a deeper, more intuitive grasp of anatomy. HSL’s bones and models collection supports diverse learning styles and academic success.
