Applications for the 2027 Barbara Van Brimmer Academic Scholar Awards are now open.
The Barbara Van Brimmer Academic Awards honor an accomplished Ohio State University Library Scientist whose passion for medical history and the history of medicine contributed to the creation of the Medical Heritage Center at the Health Sciences Library at The Ohio State University.
The awards provide educational, professional development and travel support for professional staff and librarians of the Medical Heritage Center, the Health Sciences Library and other Ohio State libraries. They may also support librarians and students in library or information science interested in preservation training and education.
Appropriate areas or topics for support include an innovative research project, a specific educational experience or a well-defined career enrichment activity. The activity should take place under the aegis of a nationally known educational program. Projects up to $5,000 will be considered for possible funding.
Application Requirements
Applications should include:
- A brief description of the course, program, seminar, workshop or research to be supported.
- A description of how the opportunity will benefit the applicant in their position, career objectives or professional development.
- Dates and location of the activity.
- Name of the sponsoring institution, organization, business or association.
- The specific dollar amount requested and a budget indicating how the funds will be used, such as travel or registration fees.
- Information about any matching funds available to the applicant. Matching funds are not required to be considered for the award.
Recipients must acknowledge funding support from the Barbara Van Brimmer Academic Awards Endowment in any publications or promotional pieces resulting from the award. Award recipients must also submit a final report to the Van Brimmer Awards Committee within one month of completing the funded activity.
All applications must fall within the guidelines of Senate Bill 1. Guidance is available on the University Guidance — Senate Bill 1 | Ohio State Office of University Compliance and Integrity website. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Van Brimmer award.
