Every year on the third Thursday of November, communities across the nation pause to recognize a vital backbone of our healthcare landscape: National Rural Health Day. This year, falling on November 19, National Rural Health Day provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the unique health needs, incredible resilience and community-driven innovations found throughout rural populations.

For healthcare providers and librarians, National Rural Health Day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a call to action to ensure that quality health information and care reach every individual, no matter their zip code.

What is Rural Health, and Why Does It Matter?

When we talk about "rural health," we look at the overall well-being of individuals living in non-metropolitan areas. These communities can be geographically isolated from most of the metropolitan area, and their population looks to the tight-knit social bonds created within their community to counter their distance.

Yet, while rural communities often have strong community support systems, they also face distinct systemic challenges in healthcare delivery. Residents frequently navigate physician and doctor shortages, longer travel distances to specialized medical centers, limited public transportation options, and broadband internet constraints that can hinder telehealth access. Despite these hurdles, rural Americans demonstrate resourcefulness, relying on local clinics, critical access hospitals, mobile units and community health workers to stay well.

Celebrating National Rural Health Day means acknowledging these challenges within the rural areas while celebrating the power of community solutions. It means committing to bridge the gap so that living outside a major metropolitan area never compromises a person's right to reliable, expert health education.

Trusted Resources for Rural Health Advocacy and Information

To effectively support rural health, patients, caregivers and clinicians need access to credible resources. Here are a couple of informative organizations that improve rural medical literacy and provides helpful resources:

The Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub)

As the nation's rural health information portal, RHIhub provides toolkits, funding resources, research reports and guides covering everything from rural mental health programs to mobile health clinics.

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA)

A national nonprofit organization working to improve the health and well-being of rural Americans and providing leadership on rural health issues through advocacy and education.

How the Library for Health Information (LHI) Supports Rural Health Literacy

Bridging healthcare gaps is not only about access to physical clinics; it’s also about information access. At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the Library for Health Information (LHI) plays a large role in supporting health literacy for patients and communities across Ohio, including those traveling from rural regions for specialized care.

Located on the 5th floor of Rhodes Hall, the LHI acts as a welcoming, judgment-free hub where patients and their families can find plain-language, trustworthy resources on everything from chronic disease management to holistic resource guides. We know that navigating a complex medical center or managing a diagnosis away from home can feel overwhelming. Our Consumer Health Librarian provides personalized research assistance, helping patients better understand medical terminology and prepare them for conversations with their clinical physicians.

Through our digital database and resources, The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and the Health Sciences Library ensure that reliable health education is never out of reach.
