Over the past year, the residency and fellowship virtual interview room in The Ohio State University Health Sciences Library (HSL) has provided Ohio State graduate students, residents and fellows with a dedicated space to have some of the most important conversations of their professional careers. Since opening in autumn 2025, students have been able to use this private, technology-equipped environment to complete their professionally significant interviews.

Room location and tech

Located in Prior Hall room 214, the interview room was created to support the increasing use of virtual interviews in healthcare by providing a convenient, professional setting close to where Ohio State learners and clinicians study, train and work. Whether pursuing a residency placement, fellowship opportunity or post-fellowship professional position, candidates often need a quiet, formal setting that allows them to focus on presenting themselves at their best. During its first year of operation, the room has become a valuable resource for Ohio State students, residents and fellows navigating these important career transitions.

The space is available by advance reservation and features tools designed to support a seamless virtual experience. A 76-inch monitor allows users to connect a personal laptop via HDMI or use the provided computer and monitor which is equipped with a webcam, microphone and speakers. The computer supports platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Office 365. A whiteboard is also available in the room, and users are encouraged to bring their own headphones and accessories to customize their setup.

New in autumn 2026: available for virtual oral board exams

As the needs of Ohio State's health sciences community continue to evolve, so too has the purpose of the interview room. This year, we expanded the scope of approved users beyond residency and fellowship candidates to include physicians completing virtual oral board certification examinations. These exams, which often require a distraction-free environment and reliable technology, share many of the same logistical needs as virtual interviews for residencies and fellowships. By broadening access, the library can support healthcare professionals at yet another critical stage of their careers, from training and specialization through certification and ongoing professional advancement.

Who can use Prior 214

Because of its highly specialized purpose, Prior 214 is open to only a limited set of students:

  • Final-year graduate students in the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, and Public Health, as well as the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, for residency interviews
  • Current residents, fellows and physicians for fellowship interviews, board certification activities and employment-related virtual appointments
