The Health Sciences Library (HSL) invites you to explore our collection of ready-to-use Carmen Course Modules and Pages as you get ready for the second half of the semester.
All the modules and pages are health sciences-focused, and they can be used as-is or adapted to fit your instructional context. If your students have a research project in the weeks ahead or need a refresh on searching PubMed, the Carmen Course Modules can help you scaffold learning within your course.
What are Carmen Course Modules?
These resources are available in two different options: multi-part Modules, and stand-alone Pages.
Multi-part Modules: Multiple pages of content tackling a larger instructional topic; modules also include a discussion board and an auto-graded quiz. Topics include:
- How to Create a Search Strategy
- Data in the Health Sciences
- Annotated Bibliographies versus Literature Reviews
- Introduction to the Health Sciences Library
Pages: Single page of content focused on a specific topic. Topics include:
- Identify Parts of a Scientific Article
- Evidence Based Practice Toolkit
- What is a Systematic Review?
- Match Your Topic or Question to a Database
How would I use Carmen Course Modules in my class?
They can be used as a refresher for students as they get started on a research project; as a pre-class activity to get students thinking about their search terms, research topics or information needs; or as a way to assess students’ prior knowledge of a topic.
Carmen Modules and Pages can also be used to scaffold an assignment within a course by providing introductory material on PubMed and building search strategies, leading to an assignment where students are asked to apply what they have learned. The discussion boards and quizzes included in Modules can be edited by the course instructor to align with course learning outcomes.
