Kathryn K. Peppe (Class of 2025)
Kathryn K. Peppe, RN, MS, FAAIDD, FAAN, has been a transformative force in nursing across central Ohio, dedicating over five decades to advancing healthcare, influencing public policy and mentoring future nursing leaders. Her career reflects an unwavering commitment to maternal and child health, public health advocacy and the well-being of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A 1969 graduate of The Ohio State University School of Nursing, Peppe immersed herself in professional nursing associations. Over the years, she has played key roles at local, state and national levels. Among her many honors, she was elected a fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Most recently, she was a founding member of ANA-Ohio, the state affiliate of the American Nurses Association, established in 2023. Additionally, her expertise has been recognized nationally through numerous speaking engagements, further solidifying her influence in the field.
As a guiding force in nursing, Peppe has fostered and shared expertise in maternal and infant health, early intervention services and care for children with developmental disabilities. As Division Chief for the Ohio Department of Health’s Family and Community Health Services, she was instrumental in shaping maternal and child health initiatives, early intervention programs and genetic services. Peppe’s dedication to mentorship was evident during her tenure at Ohio State and more prominently, in her work with the Ohio Department of Health. Many of her mentees have gone on to lead statewide programs addressing critical healthcare needs.
One of Peppe’s most notable accomplishments was co-authoring “Mental Retardation: Nursing Approaches to Care,” shaping best practices for nurses working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also played a key role in developing Ohio’s statewide Comprehensive Interagency Early Intervention Program, establishing a structured system of care for children with developmental delays. This program ensures that children receive early assessments, individualized care plans and ongoing evaluations to help them integrate into their communities at appropriate levels.
Peppe’s contributions to nursing and healthcare in central Ohio continue to shape the future of nursing. Her legacy stands as a testament to the power of nursing leadership in advancing public health and patient care.
