Jeanne Clement (Class of 2008)
Jeanne Clement, psychiatric nurse and educator, makes a difference every day in the field of mental health. She uses her skills in counseling patients, teaching students and leading community initiatives to improve the lives of those dealing with mental health problems. Clement, associate professor of nursing and psychiatry at The Ohio State University, joined the faculty in 1981 with experience in nursing education and in private practice as a mental health therapist. She holds an appointment as adjunct professor at Capital University School of Law, teaching a course in Health Care Conflict and Dispute Resolution. For the past 25 years she has collaborated with College of Law faculty at Ohio State in mediation skills training for law and graduate nursing students. Her research includes studying dispute resolution and recovery oriented interventions, both mental and physical, for people with psychiatric diagnoses.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Clement graduated from Fairview Park School of Nursing in Lakewood, Ohio in 1959. She received her master's degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at Hunter/Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City, and her doctorate in Nursing Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Nationally, Clement has been president of the Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and president of the Foundation of the International Society for Mental Health Nursing. She was inducted as a fellow of the Academy of Nursing in 1995 and is currently president of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Internationally, Clement has presented papers in France, Brazil and Turkey and has met with a team of international psychiatric nurses in Bellagio, Italy, to identify common issues for educators and to develop transnational curricula.
Clement was honored as a Legend in 2008.
