The Ohio State University Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of Stephanie Schulte, MLIS, as the new assistant vice president for Health Sciences and director of The Ohio State University Health Sciences Library (HSL), effective December 1, 2023.

She had been the HSL interim director since July 1, 2023, and immediately provided thoughtful and intentional leadership to the library.

Professor Schulte has served as a faculty librarian at Ohio State since 2008, when she joined the HSL as a coordinator in Research and Education Services. She is a tenured professor with University Libraries and has been the assistant director for Research and Education Services, overseeing a team of liaison librarians, since 2019. She is a liaison to The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Prior to becoming a librarian, Professor Schulte spent a decade conducting research in industry laboratories in Ohio. Her current research involves understanding how basic science librarians work with basic scientists. As an educator, she has shared her significant expertise with learners in a variety of areas, including teaching Mastering the Biomedical Science Literature I in the Ohio State Biomedical Science undergraduate program for nine years. She also has provided instruction on topics including the National Institutes of Health Data Management and Sharing Policy; expert search and guidance on systematic reviews and evidence-based medicine; copyright connected to research, teaching and clinical care; research metrics used in promotion and tenure; and selection of journals for publishing research findings.

Professor Schulte has demonstrated collaborative and inclusive leadership through her commitment to shared governance at Ohio State. In May, she completed her sixth year as a member of the University Senate, with service to the Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee and the Intellectual Property, Patents, and Copyright Committee, which led to important reviews of the university’s health plan and gender salary gap. She has served as a member of the Ohio State College of Medicine’s Educational Leadership Team since 2017, and she provided expert guidance as a member of the Safe Campus and Scientific Advisory Group and the Comprehensive Monitoring Team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Schulte earned her Master of Library and Information Science degree from Kent State University and her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Morehead State University. From 2015-16, she was a Fellow in the highly competitive National Library of Medicine/Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries Leadership Program, through which she received mentoring from the director of Duke University’s Medical Center Library & Archives.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Schulte on this new role!
