About the Lecture

Dr. Gale’s lecture will explore insulin as a molecule, a life-giving therapy and a commodity. Dr. Gale will also take a look at the prospects for stem cell-derived insulin therapy and its potential relevance to a world in which the health gap continues to widen.

About Edwin Gale

Edwin Gale is Emeritus Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Bristol in Bristol, United Kingdom. He was former head of the University Department of Clinical Science in North Bristol. He qualified in 1972 and was awarded his first chair at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He moved from there to Bristol with his team in 1997.

Dr. Gale has written reviews and opinion pieces on many aspects of diabetes and was editor of Diabetologia from 2003–2010. His research centered on the epidemiology, immunology and prediction of Type 1 diabetes, and he led the European Nicotinamide Intervention Trial (ENDIT), which screened 35,000 first degree relatives in 25 countries and performed a blinded clinical intervention in those at highest risk.

Dr. Gale has received awards including the Banting Award of Diabetes–UK and the Best Award from Toronto. He has an interest in drug safety issues, and chaired the Diabetes and Endocrinology Advisory Group for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) from 2006–2011. He chaired a WHO panel on Essential Medicines for Diabetes in 2017, and co-chaired the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on diabetes in sub-saharan Africa.

In retirement, Dr. Gale has written "The Species that Changed Itself: How Prosperity Reshaped Humanity," published by Penguin Books. He is hoping to publish his second book, "Life in the Age of Insulin," later in 2022.
